The WHO report highlights that in the last 28 days, there have been 2370 reported deaths and nearly 195,433 active COVID cases worldwide

A new virus outbreak, similar to COVID, called Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), has raised global concerns. Several countries, including India, are closely monitoring its spread to prevent further chaos. At the same time, COVID remains a threat, as two people in India lost their lives between June and July, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report. The latest data reveals that India reported 77 new cases and 908 new COVID cases nationwide over the past two months. Globally, there has been a 30% increase in new cases and deaths have risen by 26%.

In total, over 1,86,000 new cases and more than 2,800 new deaths were reported across 96 countries. According to India’s Health Ministry COVID dashboard, several states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, are currently facing a positivity rate. However, on a positive note, there has been no major rise in the severe cases or hospitalizations so far.

Meanwhile, the WHO report highlights that in the last 28 days, there have been 2370 reported deaths and nearly 195,433 active COVID cases worldwide. The report also states that JN.1, the most commonly reported variant of interest (VOI), has been detected in 135 countries. Two new versions of the JN.1, called KP.3.1.1 and LB.1, are becoming more common. This means that these subvariants are spreading faster in different places.

Apart from India, South Korea is seeing a rise in COVID cases. According to data from 42 children’s hospitals, the number of child cases jumped from 387 between July 22-26 to 1080 from August 5-9. Surprisingly, 27 US states are also experiencing very high levels of COVID activity. According to WHO, there have been over 775 million confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide and more than 7 million deaths have been reported since the pandemic started back in 2020.

The newly reported Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) affects the respiratory system and it is known to spread mostly during specific season, including winters. It shares many similar symptoms with COVID, including respiratory issues, cough, fever, nasal congestion and difficulty in breathing.
