There’s a common belief that eating rice late at night can lead to weight gain and harm one’s health.

Rice is a key source of carbohydrates.

Rice is a staple in every household but despite its popularity, there are numerous myths surrounding rice consumption that tend to leave people confused about its health effects. It’s not uncommon to hear of rice enthusiasts, affectionately called ‘Veto’ in West Bengal, who incorporate it into nearly every meal. However, it’s crucial to understand how and when to eat rice to avoid any potential health issues. If consumed incorrectly, rice can have adverse effects, so let’s explore the advice shared by a medical expert.

Renowned doctor Bidhan Chandra Roy, speaking to Local 18, emphasised that rice is a key source of carbohydrates, which are essential for providing the body with energy. “Rice helps regulate blood sugar levels, ensuring a steady supply of energy throughout the day,” he explained. However, Dr Roy cautioned that consuming rice and then immediately going to sleep can disrupt the digestion process. “If you eat rice and lie down right after, the body struggles to digest it properly, leading to potential stomach discomfort. It’s vital to stay active for a while after eating rice to aid digestion.”

There’s a common belief that eating rice late at night can lead to weight gain and harm one’s health. However, this misconception isn’t entirely true. According to Dr Roy, eating rice at night isn’t inherently bad, as long as it’s done at the right time. The key factor is timing. “As long as rice is consumed earlier in the evening, it doesn’t pose a risk to health,” he said.

The problem arises when rice is eaten late at night, especially after 10 or 11 pm. This can interfere with the body’s digestion process. To ensure proper digestion, Dr. Roy recommends eating dinner, including rice, by 9 pm at the latest, giving your body ample time to complete the digestion process before sleep.

So, while rice can be an excellent source of energy, it’s important to follow some basic guidelines about when and how to consume it for maximum health benefits.
